Funding for landscaping and lawn-care companies

Landscaping starts every year with a spring ramp-up that costs money before the first invoice goes out and ends with a winter that may or may not include snow revenue. The right funding is arranged in July, not March.

How the money moves in this trade

Residential maintenance is often prepaid or billed monthly by card. Commercial maintenance contracts bill monthly in arrears on net-30, so April’s work is paid in June. Installs (hardscape, irrigation) take deposits and progress payments. Spring means hiring crews, servicing or replacing mowers, buying plant material, and fueling trucks, all before the first commercial invoice is paid. Snow, where it exists, is a separate seasonal business with its own equipment.

Two worked scenarios

Scenario A: the March ramp

A hypothetical company needs $30,000 in March for crew onboarding, mower service, and plant material, and will collect the first commercial invoices in May. A line of credit arranged the previous summer, drawn for 75 days (hypothetical 14% APR, 2% draw fee), costs about $1,463. A March advance (hypothetical 1.25 factor, 2% fee, 26 weeks) costs $8,100 and its debits run into September.

Scenario B: two zero-turn mowers and a dump trailer

Equipment with a resale market and a multi-year life: equipment financing or dealer financing, sometimes with seasonal skip-payment options. Compare the dealer’s rate including fees against an equipment lender’s written offer.

Questions specific to this trade

  • Does the equipment lender offer seasonal or skip-payment schedules for landscaping equipment?
  • Can commercial maintenance contracts be billed in advance or on the first of the month rather than in arrears?
  • If I add snow services, is that equipment financed separately?
  • How much reserve should I hold from summer revenue to cover the winter without borrowing?

Watch for. Fixed daily or weekly debits taken in spring run straight through the winter gap.

Common questions

Can a new landscaping company get equipment financing?
Commonly, with a down payment and a personal guarantee; the equipment secures it. Working-capital products generally wait for deposit history.
